ARESTA’s Social Cohesion department was established to promote tolerance and social cohesion – the living together – between South African citizens and foreign nationals. It works closely with Cape Town’s township communities affected by the past xenophobic attacks to address xenophobia and prevent xenophobic violence.

One of the goals is to change the perspective through which the communities view asylum seekers and refugees and the negative stereotypes against this social group. The Social Cohesion department seeks to achieve a society characterised by peace, non-violence, tolerance, and social harmony – where if there are disputes between South Africans and foreign nationals (or amongst South Africans) violence is not considered as an option to pursue. ARESTA tries to implement community members as role models and leaders that take responsibility for the actions of their communities and that take a lead in ensuring that their communities are free from violence either amongst South Africans or between South Africans and foreign nationals.

This is achieved through social cohesion activities, trainings & workshops as well as the help of our social partners.
